Jesse Roger Smith
Jesse Roger Smith was born on July 10, 1928, in Astoria, Queens, New York. Growing up in the bustling city, Jesse’s artistic inclinations led him to study at Cooper Union, a prestigious private college in Lower Manhattan, where he earned his degree in Art. He later founded his own graphic art business in New York City, where he built a long and successful career. In the 1950s, Jesse served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, a chapter of his life that shaped his worldview. Following his service, he spent several years living in Mexico, where he immersed himself in the local culture and art. This experience influenced much of his later work, adding vibrant colors and bold forms reflective of Mexican artistic traditions.
Outside of his professional life, Jesse was known for his deep love of the beach, especially Fire Island, where he spent many summers. It was there he met his future wife, June-Eva Olsson. Jesse was a man of many talents and loved to cook and perform magic tricks, entertaining both children and adults alike. His creativity and kindness left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Jesse passed away on November 29, 2002, at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of artistic expression and warm memories for those whose lives he touched.
